Yarn Along and Stuff

First things first. Yarn and knitting and reading. I finished Anna's little mouse. I think she turned out cute, but there were a few learning moments I thought I would pass along.

1. Not all worsted yarn is the same. Anna liked this skein of yarn I scored for free from Knit Picks. It is a pretty color, but it is acrylic. It is much, much thicker than the Knit Picks washable wool worsted yarn I used for the dress. I would have changed yarns, except that Anna asked me to use it.

2. Working with thick yarn on tiny needles may cause the needle to snap.

3. In the end, if the recipient is happy, that is all that really matters. And she is.

Waiting for her dress to be made.

Taking a peek outside. It looks much warmer indoors!

Ahh, that's more like it. A dress!

All dressed up with a little sparkly touch for when you need to feel special!

I thought I'd share my little knitting spot. My ipad has my patterns on it, the coffee is very essential, and I love having a cozy spot to sit and knit. See that yarn that the mouse is sitting upon? It will hopefully be a hat in a couple of days. The first attempt would have fit Therese, though I was knitting an adult size pattern! It was so pretty, but I ripped it out and am trying again.

I have been reading The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict by Trenton Lee Stewart to the kids at bedtime. We have been listening to Johnny Tremain on Audible.

Now, for the "stuff" part of the post. I have been experiencing the winter blues quite overwhelmingly lately. I am lost. I thought you might like an illustration of just how I feel. I saw this poor guy on the table yesterday and knew just how he felt.

I may not be a doctor, but I know stressed out when I see it! This is my face most of the time, or at least the face I want to make. And the legs? Yep, I feel like I have lost my footing. I can't seem to get it together.

I could use a prayer or two if you have a moment! Spring needs to hurry up and get here already. In the meantime, I will try to soldier on, and remember to ask God for those daily graces to make it through this awful thing called February.

Joining Ginny, as usual.

  1. Your mouse is adorable!! Winter is a super yucky time, seems like a lot of us have commented on that in this yarn along. Hang in there, some of the girls saw bulbs coming up in their garden. Hard to believe. Isn't February the shortest month. I hope so!!

  2. I love your mouse and everything about her. Those big feet are sooo cute and the dress is just precious! And I think Anna picked the right yarn as it looks so soft and fluffy!
I'm sorry you are feeling so down and lost. I send some good thoughts your way and hope you will feel better very soon. The light is already coming back - slowly.

    1. I really enjoy making the little mice and bunnies and elephants! They are so sweet.

Thank you for wishing me well. If the sun would just shine on Germany for even a few minutes, I think I could possibly make it until spring!

  3. Your little mouse is as cute as a button. Cuter even!

If I lived where you live, I would like to get out and see the sights, too. As it is, I go to daily Mass about once a week, Sunday Mass, dance one evening and one afternoon, and that's as much as I care to get out. But if I had little ones, I guess I wouldn't want to be cooped up either. Wishing you some sunshine. We had some today but it was the fooler kind -- 18 degrees and blue skies!

    Sending some prayers your way.

  6. Gosh, this is the 2nd post I've seen on terrible February....so sorry and yes, extra prayers.

Tom just told me that February is also the worst month for him. for me it's probably January and March....I hate March. I always want spring and it never comes in March...

I have to say that mouse is just about the cutest thing I've ever seen!!

The Door Table

Once there was a store in Georgia. It is no more, but how I wish it was. I likened going in there to treasure hunting. One never knew what was going to be in there, and you had to dig through and wade through all the "other people's treasures" to find your own. I once found a set of blue and white teacups and saucers from England. I found lace handkerchiefs, a rocking chair, and an end table. But by far the best find was my kitchen table. I had stopped by one day while the kids were taking horseback lessons and the then little ones were asleep. The store was not open, but I went up to the window to see if anything new was there. And it was there. The table. And six chairs too! We were in need of a bigger table with Jack on the way. My mom had offered to give us her old one, which I was going to accept if I didn't find something I liked better. I didn't want anyone else to even see the table because I knew it was supposed to be ours, but one can never tell abo...

Walking a New Path

Well now. It has been quite a while, hasn't it?  I have kept silent about my struggles for the past four years, mainly because I was in the midst of something that I never imagined could happen to our family. And it wasn't just my story. It still is not.  A friend once told me I am an external processor, and I suppose she is right. I find that saying things out loud help me find the answer, if there is one. There was no good answer, as it turns out. And so, I am sad to say, that I am now divorced. A single mother, navigating a life I never imagined.  But there are some things that haven't changed. My faith, for one. I know that God is with me on this journey and that He is way smarter and wiser than I could ever be. He has held me close as I wept and grieved the end of my marriage. He held my hand as I packed up what would fit in a moving truck and drove our belongings to a new home. He has led me to new jobs and I can only trust that all will be well if only I cont...

Fog and faith

I stepped out into the coolness of the November morning to start the car and defog the windows, preparing to take Jack to school. Daylight had yet to appear. As we drove the many miles, the sky lightened, and we could see the mist hanging out just above the grass. We usually listen to a story together on our drive, adding commentary, exchanging a knowing glance or a shocked expression as the twists and turns unfold. I relish this time with Jack. I know that all too soon he will be preparing to leave the nest, like his sisters before him.  On the drive back, I pull my rosary from my purse and pray. By this time, the sun is just about to appear, making the sky a beautiful orange-pink on the horizon. I am pondering much as I pray, for the path I am on is once again rocky and uncertain. Such is life, whether we have faith or not. Faith makes it bearable. For the most part, the road home is a straight shot and I can see the ribbon of road laid out before me, narrowing in the dista...
